Dramatic Hips Are The Trendiest Silhouette For Fall 2023

Everyday streetwear isn't the only type of fashion that's influenced by expensive haute couture designers showing off their new designs at fashion week events. During London's most recent Fashion Week, a trend emerged that isn't likely to be deemed wearable by most people on a daily or casual basis: dramatic hip dresses. Rather than assuming that the look isn't for you, however, consider this runway-ready silhouette for your next formal event. Do you already have a dress selected? If not, it may be the perfect time to jump on the fall fashion trend train.

We've put together a curated list of formal dresses that embody the spirit of embellishing the hips. And don't worry — naturally curvy hips are not required to rock the look. Take a gander before choosing your dress for your next formal event and get inspired to strut your stuff in the latest style to grace runways across the world. While this is inherently a maximalist design, there are more subtle variations if you prefer a minimal style.

Full tulle skirt

For a classic, princess-like look that juts out at the hips, look for a dress with a classic full tulle skirt. Stick to a tea-length option over a full ball gown, if you'd like to avoid tripping over and stepping on your own dress all night long. Naturally, dresses with more tulle will create a bolder look, so you can easily tailor this to your preferences, whether you prefer a maximalist fashion moment or something more subtle.

Hippy high-low

High-low dresses can sometimes get a bad name in the fashion world, but when you pull one off the right way it's a major home run. When playing up your hips is your goal, a high-low dress with a voluminous chiffon or tulle skirt is very difficult to beat.

Cinched and flared

Another automatic winner when it comes to making your hip line pop is any type of early aughts peplum silhouette dress, but particularly those with stiffer fabrics. Cinched at the waist and knee with a little extra flare placed right at the hip, it's difficult to compete with this silhouette. The hips don't lie, after all.

Chiffon layers

If you don't naturally carry a lot of volume in your hip area, now is the chance to pile it on with gorgeous, fluffy fabrics like organza, chiffon, or taffeta. Look for short layers toward the top of the skirt that jut out at hip atop of longer, flowing layers below.

Mini A-line

If you're a fan of the classic pinup girl shape, look for an A-line dress or — better yet — a mini A-line. You'll need to invest in a tulle underskirt to really create some poofy drama around the hips. Knee-high leather boots are, of course, optional, but they certainly add a westerncore vibe to the outfit.

Relaxed reinforcement

If you'd like to get in on the trend, but don't want to stray too far from your minimalist roots, you can certainly still rock the look. For a less extreme version, simply go for a peplum dress in a softer fabric, like lace or cotton, that features a looser-fitting skirt. It will be comfortable and fashionable.
